The Sun Gate, also known as Intipunku, serves as a significant archaeological site connecting to the Machu Picchu Sanctuary. It is believed to have functioned as a control gate for those entering and exiting the sanctuary.

Dedicated to the Incan Sun god, Inti, the Sun Gate holds ceremonial importance, as the sun aligns with the structure at certain times of the year.

Situated at an elevation of 2745 meters above sea level, Intipunku offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Machu Picchu Sanctuary, including Machu Picchu Mountain, Vilcabamba or Urubamba River, Putukusi Mountain, and Huayna Picchu Mountain.

Reaching Intipunku marks the end of various trekking routes, such as the 1, 2, 4, or 5-day Inca Trail, with the downhill journey from this point providing stunning vistas of the sanctuary.

Best Ways to Reach the Sun Gate:

  1. Directly from the Inca Trail 4 Days, where trekkers are rewarded with their first view of Machu Picchu.
  2. Through the 1 or 2-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, which includes a visit to the Sun Gate the day before touring the citadel.

As per recent government regulations, hiking to the Sun Gate directly from Machu Picchu Citadel is not permitted. Therefore, the only access to the Sun Gate is via an Inca Trail trek, including the 1-day, Short, or Classic 4-day Inca Trail.

Activities and Attractions at Intipunku:

  1. Visit the Offering Rock: A historical site where visitors can observe offerings, including Coca leaves, left by ancient travelers and modern-day visitors.
  2. Observe Amazing Landscapes: Intipunku offers unique views of Machu Picchu Sanctuary, Vilcanota River, Wayna Picchu Mountain, Aguas Calientes town, and surrounding areas.
